Student Intern (Operations) - Hobbs Ranch (Summer 2019)

This internship is offered through the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Internship Program.

Hobbs Ranch, the 2015 Commercial Producer of the Year as named by the Kansas Livestock Association, is seeking a student intern for Summer 2019. The student will work approximately 240 total hours for the internship. Hobbs Ranch and the student together will arrange a full-time or part-time work schedule. The start and end dates listed in this post are flexible.

The student intern will work at the employer’s place of business but will be paid through Fort Hays State University.

Hobbs Ranch is located primarily in Graham and Trego counties. The ranch has been in the same location since homesteaded in 1887 and currently runs about 600 cows.

We are looking for an intern with good communication and problem solving skills. The individual must be a self-starter and will become engaged in the overall operation.

Specific responsibilities include:
·        Monitoring herd health
·        Observing breeding activities
·        Maintaining water and mineral supplies
·        Performing minor fence and facility repair
·        Keeping a log of pastures checked and activities there
·        Assisting in other areas of the farm as needed (haying, planting,etc)

The intern will gain better knowledge of the production side of the cattle industry not only from the hands-on experience but also from working with a ranch dedicated to a quality product.
