Student Intern (Event Planning) - Goodland Carnegie Arts Center (Summer 2019)

This internship is offered through the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Internship Program.

The Goodland Carnegie Arts Center in Goodland is seeking a student intern for Summer 2019. The student will work approximately 240 total hours for the internship. The Goodland Carnegie Arts Center and the student together will arrange a full-time or part-time work schedule. The start and end dates listed in this post are flexible.

The student intern will work at the employer’s place of business but will be paid through Fort Hays State University.

Temporary housing is available at a very reasonable rate. The employer will consider seeking funding assistance for the intern's housing, if requested.

The Goodland Carnegie Arts Center serves many functions in the community, including the organization of free public art events. Our flagship program is the Community Art Walk. This event takes place at the end of the summer and incorporates many different artists, organizations and city entities. The student intern will be involved in the planning, organization, marketing and execution of the event. This will also include assistance in the grant writing process, and as well as assisting the director with other projects as needed.

The short term goals the intern will be responsible for are researching similar events, assisting in the grant writing process, and assisting in the development of a marketing campaign. The long term goal is the successful organization and execution of the event, in tandem with the director.

The intern will first learn about the arts center, our mission, and our role in the regional community, and how this compares to other organizations of both comparable and different scales, and different locales. The intern will work with the director in writing a grant for event funding. The processes will include preparation of a budget, securing letters of support, and completing a narrative that communicates the event, and organization's, intents. The intern will then be guided in the process of organizing the event, which will include contacting city officials, filing permits, securing entertainment, and marketing the event to the public.

This is an ideal internship for students interested in nonprofit work, grant writing and the fine arts. The intern will experience the entire process of developing a multi-faceted free art event, open to the public. Marketing and event planning are skills that will be developed over the course of the summer, as well as an introduction to the grant writing process. The intern will get hands-on experience in project management and the unique day-to-day realities of the non-profit sector located in rural Kansas.
