Student Intern (Children's Programming Coordinator) - Lincoln Carnegie Library (Summer 2019)

This internship is offered through the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Internship Program.

The Lincoln Carnegie Library is seeking a student intern for Summer 2019. The student will work approximately 240 total hours for the internship. The Lincoln Carnegie Library and the student together will arrange a full-time or part-time work schedule. The start and end dates listed in this post are flexible.

The student intern will work at the employer’s place of business but will be paid through Fort Hays State University.

The Lincoln Carnegie Library is a very active small library located in Lincoln, Kansas. Last year over 120 children participated in the Summer Library Program. The library has high circulation and inter-library loan figures, and it continues to grow.

Summer Intern (Children's Programming Coordinator) Job Description
The intern will help plan and implement all aspects of the Children's Summer Library Program. Duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Marketing the program in the community and on social media.
  • Assisting the Library Director in planning and coordinating approximately 9 program events for children age 6 to 12.
  • Keeping statistics on participation and attendance.
  • Preparing materials and spaces for each event.
  • Solely planning and implementing 6-8 story time events for preschoolers that connect with the 1000 books before Kindergarten program.
  • Providing direction and marketing ideas for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program with a goal of reaching all families in the Lincoln area.
  • Working closely with the teen advisory board to obtain volunteers to assist with events and story times.
  • Attending library board meetings and participating in discussions related to library planning and funding.
As time allows, other duties will include:
  • Making purchase suggestions for books and movies.
  • Working the front desk to check out books and materials.
  • Assisting with inter-library loan.
  • Processing new books and movies. Shelving materials.

The intern will provide ideas and input on how the Lincoln Carnegie Library can better serve the community.

Training
The intern will initially be trained on all aspects of library operations including checking out and shelving books, inter-library loan, keeping library statistics, reference materials and customer service.
Ongoing training will involve:
  • Marketing and implementing a successful Summer Library Program.
  • Planning activities for children age birth to teen.
  • Public relations in dealing with a wide variety of customers of all ages and socioeconomic classes.
  • Training on how to prepare for a board meeting.

At the end of the internship, the student will have gained skills in customer service, working with children age birth to teen, planning and coordinating a wide variety of events and marketing and publicizing those events. The intern will also gain knowledge of budgeting and planning procedures for a non-profit entity and will work closely with a board of directors.

Qualifications:
  • Must be dependable and have excellent customer relation skills.
  • Will be expected to handle self in a professional manner at all times.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Must truly enjoy working with children of all ages.
  • Experience in marketing and/or business is beneficial, but is not required
