Student Intern (Marketing/Video) - Wilson Community Foundation (Summer 2019)

This internship is offered through the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Internship Program.

The Wilson Community Foundation is seeking a student intern for Summer 2019. The student will work approximately 240 total hours for the internship. The Wilson Community Foundation and the student together will arrange a full-time or part-time work schedule. The start and end dates listed in this post are flexible.

The student intern will work at the employer’s place of business but will be paid through Fort Hays State University.

The Wilson Community Foundation, which is an umbrella for the Wilson Czech Tourism Hub, will partner with the Midland Railroad Hotel to develop and implement a series of interview vignettes to advertise the cultural and historical background of Wilson, Kansas.

The student intern will be involved in a community oral history/marketing project. The intern will help us achieve our business goals by developing a marketing tool to use locally, regionally, and state-wide in our tourism venues. In turn, the community's economic development grows through additional visitors to the area.

The intern will develop guiding questions for interviews (with the help of local residents); film vignettes of the interviews; digitally enhance and prepare the interviews for publication on social media and websites; research and determine key historical points of the area that need to be included in the videos; and lastly, develop a support system through high school students and community members so the project can grow and react to community needs. A culminating final experience will be a presentation of the videos to the community.

Through local and regional mentors the intern, will build filming skills and a deeper experience of editing. Communications skills are needed and will be further developed by establishing a trust and relationship with community elders holding our oral history. A basic understanding of social media is necessary so the intern can learn what is necessary to attract tourism and further economic development within a small rural community. This is a perfect internship for students to combine film, history and communication.

From this internship, the student can expect to learn how to organize historical information, both oral and written, create finished shorts that can be used for marketing, and examine analytics that accompany the use of video promotion on social media.
