Student Intern (Recreation Management) - City of Colby Recreation Department (Summer 2021)

This internship is offered through the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Internship Program.

The City of Colby Recreation Department is seeking a student intern for Summer 2021. The intern will work approximately 300 total hours for the internship. The Colby Recreation Department and the student together will arrange a work schedule. The start and end dates are flexible. The intern will work at the employer’s place of business but will be paid through Fort Hays State University.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The primary responsibility of the Colby Recreation Department is to improve the quality of life in Colby and for the citizens of Thomas County by providing recreational programs for all ages and maintaining facilities under our care. The intern will report to the Recreation Director and will assist in planning, sales/marketing, coordinating, supervising and implementing recreation programs.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
·        Assisting in the overall execution of recreation programs and special events sponsored by or associated with the Colby Recreation Department
·        Planning, scheduling, developing program services and activities, reserving facilities and scheduling grounds use
·        Sales/marketing and customer service
·        Assisting with maintenance of facilities and coordinating instructors, staff and volunteers
·        Setting up for special events and helping promote events via radio and social media
·        Providing customer service and processing participant registrations
·        Working with school district for use of facilities for activities
·        Assisting in daily operations and programs at Aquatic Park

SKILLS & ABILITIES
·        Strong written and oral communication
·        Knowledge of First Aid, CPR and AED
·        Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
·        Ability to work independently
·        Ability to handle stressful situations and work with a wide range of personalities
·        Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds
·        Willingness to work nights and/or weekends, in various weather conditions

The intern must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and must pass a background check and drug screening.

PREFERRED DEGREE PROGRAMS/MAJORS
Sports Management, Sports Marketing, Recreation and Parks Management, or similar field
